Saved us when our home HVAC went out. – We have a 1000 sq/ft master bedroom and bathroom combo. We had a smaller portable AC that just couldn’t keep up so we splurged for this one.

Gets the job done – I bought the 8,500 BTU ASHRAE / 5,000 BTU SACC model. It has performed well in a kids bedroom with full exposure to the afternoon sun. Set at 74°, it has no trouble maintaining that temperature while the temperature outside is well over 90°, even with the bedroom door standing open to the un-cooled 80° hallway.

Heat mode requires frequent or continuous draining. – We bought this unit because of the combo AC and heat. In heat mode (in Seattle area) the internal tank filled up the first night and the unit shut off. The only way to drain the internal tank is through the lower drain on the back of the unit which is only about an inch off the floor so it is difficult to get a container underneath it. After finding a relatively flat tray/container that fit under the drain it drained into the tray but filled the tray quickly and carrying it to the nearest sink without spilling was impossible/comical. Then I’m thinking about having to do this every morning after freezing each night because the unit shuts itself off and ready to return the unit. There is an upper drain on the unit but the instructions are unclear whether it works in heat mode. I contacted Black and Decker support online via chat to ask if the upper drain works for heat mode and they said I need to talk to a different department giving me a phone number that was not serviced on a Saturday. So I tried connecting a hose to the upper drain to see if it would work in heat mode and it does not work. I ended up having to drill a hole in the exterior wall and running a hose from the lower drain across the side of the house to an acceptable location which does not look great. Now we are wondering if the drain hose will freeze this winter causing the internal tank to fill up and shut off the unit then back to square one. I would think twice about buying this unit if you want to use for heat mode and you do not have a nearby floor drain for the drain hose.

Works great! – This ac unit cools off a sun facing room really well. I find it relatively quiet and it doesn’t disturb my sleep. Only negatives for me; the temperature display light is bright if you like a dark room for sleeping and there’s no back lighting for the function keys making them impossible to see in low light… both issues are easily remedied with a little ingenuity. I’ve only used the remote to turn it off and on. I would likely use it more if it was backlit too. All in all, I’m very happy with it because it gets the job done.
